Briggs & Stratton Standby Generators

A brand that some might associate more with lawnmower engines is also the maker of automatic standby generator systems.

Briggs & Stratton, with a central office in Milwaukee, WI, began in 1908 as a partnership between Harold M. Stratton, a financier, and Stephen F. Briggs, an inventor. Today, the company is the largest manufacturer of air-cooled gasoline engines for outdoor

power equipment in the world; their products are sold and serviced in more than 100 countries on six continents, amounting to $1.9 billion in total sales for 2014.

Briggs and Stratton Generator

The company made a big splash in the generator market when it acquired Generac Portable Products Systems in 2000. Four years later, the company purchased Simplicity Manufacturing, which included the Giant-Vac, Snapper, Ferris, and Snapper-Pro brands. Not long thereafter, the company kicked off a new branding campaign centered on the slogan, “The Power Within,” which stressed the company’s century-plus legacy as well as its fondness for the independent spirit in everyone.

In true company fashion, Briggs & Stratton makes its case for owning a standby generator by appealing to basic instincts: “Few scenarios for a family are met with as much universal frustration as waiting out a power outage in the dark,” reads an opening line about generators on the company’s web site.

The sales pitch goes on to note that standby generators do more than simply keep the lights on and the dishwasher cycle uninterrupted – they provide a sense of confidence that one’s family will not have to deal with an interruption in power, particularly at critical times like severe weather events, not to mention while you or others in your family are out of town and the house is unoccupied.

When shopping for a generator powered by a gasoline engine, look no further than the brand which made its name by making and selling them. Briggs & Stratton also manufactures generators than run on other fuel sources. Contact an Absolute Generators specialist to discover the Briggs & Stratton unit that best meets your needs.

Refurbishing a Generator

Buying a brand new generator is one option for ensuring that your home or business has standby power in the event of an emergency. Under certain circumstances, however, you might do just as well to consider buying a refurbished generator.

What exactly is involved in the refurbishment of a backup power supply like a generator? Here’s an overview of the general process:

First, make sure you have the proper tools for taking apart your generator. These include the basics such as wrenches and screwdrivers, as well as specialty items such as a calibrator, volt meter and fuel stabilizer. Before starting any work, be sure to read your owner’s manual thoroughly, taking care to especially note any safety warnings. Work in a well-vented area, which is a given with any electrical appliance that contains pressurized fuel. Disconnect the generator from all electrical connectors.

Inspect the self-starter. If it malfunctions, check to see if the starter fuse or battery needs replacing. If the generator will not run manually without the self-starter, check the generator’s other fuses for possible replacement.

Inspect the voltage supply to see that the generator produces an appropriate electrical output; this can help to save time during the refurbishing process. Make sure you are grounded before testing the AC voltage. Consult your owner’s manual for the proper voltage amounts – both with the engine off and as the generator starts. If there is a problem in the engine block, you will likely need to consult a professional mechanic.

Change the generator filters as well as the lubricant oil. Cleaning gummy oil out of a system is often a matter of adding a fuel stabilizer to the engine and then running it for about 30 to 40 minutes.

Should you believe that the internal wiring circuit needs refurbishing, you should first check to see if the rotor bars of the generator fit comfortably into the core slots, if the bar-to-end ring connections are properly welded or brazed, and if the rotor cage is still up to snuff.
