CARB Compliant Generators

CARB refers to an environmental protection agency named the California Air Resources Board. Their focus is on the emissions that are associated with small power equipment engines, such as those used in generators. CARB compliant products have engines that meet more stringent air quality standards. These environmentally friendly devices include some of our most popular gas generators and propane generators. If your state requires compliance for gas powered equipment, confirm that your model is CARB certified before you buy. While CARB Compliant models run cleaner than non-compliant models, they still emit some pollutants. If you are a California resident, you are required to purchase a CARB Compliant model. See our page on CARB Compliance for more information. We are always adding additional CARB Compliant Generators.

What is CARB Compliance

First off, what is CARB?  CARB refers to an environmental protection agency named the California Air Resources Board. Their focus is on the emissions that are associated with small power equipment engines, such as those used in generators.  CARB compliant products have engines that meet more stringent air quality standards.  If your state requires compliance for gas powered equipment, confirm that your model is CARB certified before you buy.  While CARB Compliant generator models run cleaner than non-compliant models, they still emit some pollutants. Currently, CA residents are not permitted to buy non-CARB Compliant Models.

CARB handles many tasks with its major function being the collection of data on the varied sources of air pollution in the United States. The reason behind this data collection is to determine the best method of reducing air pollution. A great deal of scientific information is presented to the board which collects and evaluates information. The board then makes recommendations on greenhouse gas emissions reductions to improve air quality in the United States. These recommendations are reported to the California Emission Inventory Development and Reporting System (CEIDARS) where the data helps lawmakers enact clean air laws.

Some of the dangeroius gases that CARB monitors include:

  • Various organic gases
  • Nitrogen oxides
  • Sulfuric oxides
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Particulate matter

Consumer products can be evaluated based on their ability to be compliant with CARB standards. On the most basic of levels, a generator that is dubbed CARB Compliant will automatically be considered a backup power generator that is considered among the safest and environmentally friendly. These generators do not emit as much of the harmful carbon dioxide and other gases, making them and cleaner.

CARB has established scores of strict regulations on air pollution rules and many portable generator manufacturers are doing their best to meet such standards. If you wish to acquire a generator that does effectively meet these standards, look for one that boosts the fact it is CARB compliant.
