Commercial Backup Generator Features

Desired Wattage

When you're selecting a new commercial generator, you need to be sure that the machine can power everything you need to keep your business running. A generator will show two forms of wattage: Starting and Continuous. Starting wattage refers to how much power your equipment will need to start up, and continuous is what the equipment will need to keep running. You can use our generator wattage calculator or generator wattage chart to determine how much power your business operation will need. To determine how many starting watts you'll need, add up all running watts of equipment, plus the highest amount of starting watts. The result of these two numbers will show you the necessary starting watts for your new commercial generator. 

Fuel Type 

For commercial generators, you can choose from diesel, gasoline, propane, and bi- or tri-fuel style generators. Each comes with their own benefits. Diesel generators require less upkeep and are often preferred for their efficiency and low maintenance. Providing more horsepower per gallon of fuel than comparable gas-powered generators, diesel generators can run for years without maintenance, and the fuel carries a longer shelf-life than gasoline. The downside is that if not run regularly, your diesel generator may become more prone to breaking down. Gasoline generators are less expensive than other models, and most of the time, fuel is readily available, but in times of natural disaster, gasoline may be difficult to come by. Propane, also known as LPG generators, require a tank separate from the generator itself. Unlike diesel or gasoline, propane will not degrade in storage, so it's a viable option for businesses that don't intend on having to use back up power very often. Power Phase

The power in your equipment is generated by currents. When you operate a traditional single-phase generator, you're only working with one wave of power, where your power will fall to zero three times every cycle. In a three-phase generator, power never drops to zero because this type of circuit provides three alternating currents. For small businesses with lower power needs, a single-phase generator will do the trick, but for larger businesses with a higher wattage requirement, a three-phase generator will be able to provide the amount of power necessary for keeping your business up and running. 

Run Time 

While in an emergency, you might not always know for how long you'll need to be running off back up power.
