Do-It-Yourself Project: Installing an Electric Start on a Generator

Many generators come with pull-start mechanisms. Some even come with none at all. Though both of these starter defaults are common for generators, many users prefer to have generators with electric starts. Fortunately for them, there is a do-it-yourself way to add an electric start to a generator! If you want to know how it’s done, here is a guide to installing your own electric start on a portable generator:

-You will need the following things: an engine-powered generator, a wrench, and an electric starter kit. The starter kit should come with instructions.

-First, take a look at the generator’s engine. Determine where the starter is, or would be if the generator had one. There will be mounting bosses or holes for a starter to attach to.

-Take the shroud off of the generator, to see whether or not the flywheel has a ring gear.

-If the generator flywheel has a ring gear, you are ready to move forward—an electric start can easily be installed

-If the generator flywheel does not have a ring gear, you cannot yet install an electric start. You will need to replace it with a flywheel that does have a ring gear—only then can you move on to the following steps.

-Insert the starter from the kit into the flywheel and ring gear assembly. Attach the starter to the generator with bolts. The necessary bolts also typically are included in the starter kit.

-Plug the starter into an outlet with its extension cord. The extension cord typically comes with the starter kit, but such cords can be bought in many places regardless.

-Press the starter button. If you set it up properly, this will now start the generator! Unplug the starter while you are not using it.

There are numerous benefits to installing an electric starting mechanism on your portable generator. With such a mechanism, it will be easier to turn your generator on and off, and it will be easier to ensure that it remains shut off when not in use. This process can be used to install an electric start on most types of generators, so just purchase a quality kit, follow the instructions carefully, and you will be able to make your generator experience a bit more convenient!
